Positions
- Professor, Entomology at Geneva
- Academic Director, Entomology at Geneva
Since 1973 I have been an applied tree fruit entomologist at the NYSAES with a primary focus on research on insect and mite pests of apples and pears and a second emphasis on extension outreach to stakeholders involved with these commodities throughout the state. In 2005 I also became director of Cornell`s Pesticide Management Education Program. The primary mission of this program is to educate all segments of society in NY state about the role of pesticides in managing all types of pests, and procedures for the proper use and application of these materials. In addition the program provides educational programs, training, and manuals for certification of pesticide applicators throughout NY state.

research overview
- My research program is designed to help NYS apple and pear growers manage insect and mite pests more efficiently in their orchards. Most of the specific work in my research program could broadly be defined as IPM related with a specific emphasis on techniques to help growers use pesticides more judiciously: developing improved sampling and monitoring programs; refining economic injury levels for single and multiple foliar pests; integrating chemical control techniques with alternative control tactics, and developing nonchemical control tactics such as plant resistance, biological control and cultural practices for arthropod management.
research activities
- Developing sustainable and organic pest management programs for orchard systems
- Development and Validation of a Web-based System to Provide Tree Fruit Pest Development Predictions and Management Recommendations
- Development of an enhanced tree fruit IPM website for Northeast apple growers

outreach overview
- My most common extension activity is presenting talks to growers, members of the Agri-chemical Industry, and Extension personnel to educate them in various aspects of tree fruit IPM. The impact of these talks is to help them manage pests on their farms so that they optimize insecticide use, and adopt an IPM approach to controlling the pest complex rather than using prophylactic insecticide and acaricide sprays. I also prepare extension articles that are used in various types of newsletters published by extension personnel to educate all stakeholders associated with the treefruit industry in NY and elsewhere in the United States. I also am currently the director of Cornell’s Pest Management Education Program, which promotes the safe use of pesticides for the applicator, the consumer, and the environment and also serves as a pesticide information/education center for those interested in pesticide chemicals. During the last several years, I have worked with colleagues to design, test, and implement an enhanced Tree Fruit IPM website. This will help stakeholders manage pests more efficiently and assist them in choosing appropriate pesticides when needed. More recently, I have also been actively writing a wine magazine called Indulge for our local newspaper. Articles in this column inform the general public in our area about Finger Lakes Wines, the seasonal activities of wineries, and Cornell’s enology and viticulture programs.
